The Guyana Press Association is a 60-year old organisation that has consistently embraced the professional development of technical and non-technical workers engaged in the production and dissemination of news and current affairs content for mainstream media. The GPA was born out of an era when newspapers were the predominant means of mass communication but, over the decades, the organization has come to embrace all mainstream media workers engaged in the production of journalistic content. Notwithstanding existing constitutional constraints, the GPA welcomes all mainstream media workers into the fold of their organisation and looks forward to all of them playing a meaningful role in organisational democracy. Fundamentally, the GPA places a high premium on an unfettered mainstream media in the context of freedom of information and freedom of expression but at the same time remains fully cognizant of the importance of the need for social responsibility and the adherence to internationally recognized professional ethics in the gathering and dissemination of information. Affiliated to the umbrella Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM); the GPA has in the past collaborated in the holding of a number of professional development activities for media workers in Guyana. The GPA also plays an integral role in the accreditation of media workers for Free Movement of Skilled Nationals Certificates under the rubric of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) Single Market and Economy..
